What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is basically your website name. It’s the address where people using the internet can get access to your site. It finds and identifies computers which use IP addresses
as a series of numbers on the internet. Because humans can’t remember a string of numbers, domain names were developed to identify internet entities instead.

If you’re planning to have an Internet presence as an individual, business or organisation, you should invest in a domain name. Your business will have a more professional look with your own domain name, website and email adresses.

Every domain name is unique and must be registered before you can use it. They are used in combination with domain name extensions like .com .net and others.

What is Website Hosting?

A service provided by a web hosting company is what allows individuals and organisations to make their website appear on the Internet. The hosting service provider is a business that provides the services and technologies required for the website to be viewed on the world wide web. Websites are stored on special computers called servers.

When a user wants to view your site on the Internet, they need to type your domain name or website address into their browser. This connects their computer to your server and the server delivers the web pages back to the user in the browser.

You need a domain name to host with most companies but if you don’t have one, you can purchase through some hosting providers or they can help you purchase a domain elsewhere.

What is a Webmail Account?

As long as they have access to an Internet connection and a web browser, users can access their webmail accounts. Webmail accounts also mean the user cannot draft a new email offline or read old emails, however, you can set your webmail account up on an email client -eg MS Outlook – in order to use the account on your desktop computer, tablet or phone.

Ask your Developer for some guidance.

What is Bandwidth and Data Transfer

Bandwidth and Data Transfer are two different entities. You can think of Bandwidth as a road. The wider the road, the more cars can travel it at the same time. The number of cars allowed on the road in a month would then be your Data Transfer.

The way this affects your website is the slower your site will take to load the less bandwidth you have. Visitors will have to wait their turn, regardless of their connection type. If your site is unavailable a lot of the time, it’s because the maximum amount of data transfer has been reached.

To determine what is sufficient for your website to function, you’ll need to consider the size of the site and the expected number of visitors then calculate to ensure your site can be viewed by all the visitors without any problems.

Ask your Designer or Developer to help you determine your needs.

What is a Webmaster, Web Designer and Web Developer?

A Webmaster’s responsibilities include administration of the website, registering and maintaining the site’s domain name, design of the website or supervision of designers and programmers, monitoring of the site so bandwidth and disk space is not exceeded, requirements, limitations and future growth of the site.

The visual or aesthetic aspects of the website is usually the Web Designer’s main concern working with fonts, colours, layouts and images etc. The visual enhancement of your site is their main focus.

Web Programmers deail with the coding aspects of the website. The build your site with functionality and construction being their primary concern.

Check the online portfolio for projects completed in the same scope as your own for the opportunity to test the websites live.

What is eCommerce?

Visitors can make purchases online using shopping cart software in eCommerce. When the user checks out the software calculates shipping and handling, total order, taxes and other parameters previously set by the owner of the site.

Shopping Carts can use PayPal or other full merchant features to manage the online store and collects the shopper’s payment information.

There are two main components of shopping cart software. The first is the storefront area of the site which the visitor accesses. The second is the administration area accessed by the merchant to manage the shop.
